Universities in Leicester

Leicester is home to two universities, the University of Leicester, which attained its Royal Charter in 1957 and is one of Britain's leading universities ranked 12th by the 2009 Complete University Guide, and De Montfort University, which opened in 1969 as Leicester Polytechnic and achieved university status in 1992.

De Montfort University is a university situated in the centre of Leicester, England. It currently receives more funding for its research than any other post-1992 university, and has the second highest number of National Teacher Fellows of all UK universities. It is composed of two campuses; Leicester City and the outlying Charles Frears.

The university is organised into faculties, comprising Art and Design, Business and Law, Health and Life Sciences, Humanities, Technology and the Institute of Creative Technologies. Whilst teaching takes place primarily on the Leicester City campus, the School of Nursing and Midwifery is based on the Charles Frears campus. This is set to change, following the School's planned relocation to the city campus in 2011.

The University of Leicester is a research-led university based in Leicester, England, with approximately 22,000 registered students - about 13,000 of them full-time students and 9,000 part-time and/or distance learning. The main campus is a mile south of the city centre, adjacent to Victoria Park and Wyggeston and Queen Elizabeth I College.




University of Leicester is ranked 12th in the UK (out of 113 universities) by the Guardian University Guide 2011.

The University's academic schools and departments are organised into four colleges which are, in turn, supported by the Corporate Services, including College of Arts, Humanities & Law; College of Medicine, Biological Sciences and Psychology; College of Science & Engineering ; College of Social Science.


The Department of Media and Communication, belongs to College of Arts, Humanities & Law, is one of the longest established academic centres providing undergraduate, pre-master and postgraduate courses in the area of media & communications.

  1. In most cases the fixed term will be the academic year. ... there is a term in your agreement, known as a break clause, which allows you to end the agreement early.
