General Information

Leicester is a city in the East Midlands area of England. It is also the county town of Leicestershire. The city lies on the River Soar and at the edge of the National Forest. 

In 2006, the population of the Leicester unitary authority was estimated at 289,700, the largest in the East Midlands, whilst 441,213 people lived in the wider Leicester Urban Area. 

Leicester is the 10th most populous settlement in the United Kingdom using the 2001 census definitions and the urban area is the fifteenth largest conurbation in the UK, the second largest in the region behind the Nottingham Urban Area.
Leicester is one of the oldest cities in England, with a history going back at least 2000 years. The first known name of the city is the Roman label Ratae Corieltauvorum.

Today, Leicester is located on the Midland Main Line and close to the M1 motorway. The city has a large ethnic minority population, particularly of South Asian origin, a product of immigration to the United Kingdom since the Second World War. To cater for the South Asian community, there are many Hindu, Sikh and Muslim places of worship and the Melton Road district serves as a focus, containing large numbers of Asian restaurants and other small businesses. Leicester is a centre for higher education, with both Leicester University and De Montfort University being based in the city.

Universities in Leicester

Leicester is home to two universities, the University of Leicester, which attained its Royal Charter in 1957 and is one of Britain's leading universities ranked 12th by the 2009 Complete University Guide, and De Montfort University, which opened in 1969 as Leicester Polytechnic and achieved university status in 1992.

De Montfort University is a university situated in the centre of Leicester, England. It currently receives more funding for its research than any other post-1992 university, and has the second highest number of National Teacher Fellows of all UK universities. It is composed of two campuses; Leicester City and the outlying Charles Frears.

The university is organised into faculties, comprising Art and Design, Business and Law, Health and Life Sciences, Humanities, Technology and the Institute of Creative Technologies. Whilst teaching takes place primarily on the Leicester City campus, the School of Nursing and Midwifery is based on the Charles Frears campus. This is set to change, following the School's planned relocation to the city campus in 2011.

The University of Leicester is a research-led university based in Leicester, England, with approximately 22,000 registered students - about 13,000 of them full-time students and 9,000 part-time and/or distance learning. The main campus is a mile south of the city centre, adjacent to Victoria Park and Wyggeston and Queen Elizabeth I College.




University of Leicester is ranked 12th in the UK (out of 113 universities) by the Guardian University Guide 2011.

The University's academic schools and departments are organised into four colleges which are, in turn, supported by the Corporate Services, including College of Arts, Humanities & Law; College of Medicine, Biological Sciences and Psychology; College of Science & Engineering ; College of Social Science.


The Department of Media and Communication, belongs to College of Arts, Humanities & Law, is one of the longest established academic centres providing undergraduate, pre-master and postgraduate courses in the area of media & communications.

Pre-master for Media in University of Leicester

Pre-Masters in Communications, Media & English as a Foreign Language is a special course in University of Leicester.  

If you come from countries where English is not the first language or without the academic qualifications, the pre-master course is your best choice. 

This course is provided by the Department of Media and Communication (DMC) with the English Language Teaching Unit (ELTU). It is a full-time, one year, campus-based programme, which starts from October and runs to June.
The general aim of the programme is to allow you access onto the master’s programmes of this university.

The specific aims are:

    * English language development: to ensure that each student achieves reading, writing, listening and speaking skills corresponding to at least IELTS 6.5 overall (or equivalent alternative test result);

    * Academic qualification: successful completion of this course will bring students to the academic level necessary for Master’s degree study;

    * Study and communication skills: this course will ensure that each candidate’s abilities are equivalent to those expected of a holder of a good UK first degre.

The cost of the pre-master course for media students almos £7590 in 2010.


The English Language Teaching Unit (ELTU) offers the English Language and Study Skills courses to pre-master students of the University of Leicester for 1 year. The courses includ listening, reading, speaking, writting, grammar and vocabulary, which will improve your English Language quickly. At the same time, ELTU teachers will give the media background and information to media pre-master students.

Accommodation based on University of Leicester

If you choose University of Leicester, university will offer many types of accommodation for media pre-master students.

City Living

This accommodation is offered in seven main locations, close to the university campus and the city centre. These are: Nixon Court, Freemen's Common Houses, Opal Court, Salisbury Houses, Mary Gee, The Grange and Walnut Street. All are conveniently located for public transport, shops, pubs and restaurants.

Nixon Court 


Nixon Court is extremely popular with all students, due to it's convenient location. There are 707 rooms at the Site, which is divided into five blocks.
The rooms in Blocks A and B are allocated to postgraduate and final year undergraduate students. All the bedrooms have a washbasin and flats can be for male or female students only or may be mixed.

Freemen's Common Houses
Conveniently situated only 250 metres from the main University campus, Freemen’s Common Houses are a popular choice for returning students and new international students. The Site is also close to Freemen’s Park which has a cinema, supermarket and restaurants.

Opal Court
Opal Court is a private development where the University is responsible for administering room allocations, rent collection and welfare support. Opal themselves, not the University, are responsible for the management of the building including security.

Salisbury Houses

The properties which form Salisbury Houses are approximately 750 metres from the main campus and adjacent to Victoria Park. The properties are all converted houses accommodating between 10 and 27 students in each.

Mary Gee

The Mary Gee Houses are approximately 2km from the main campus.

The Grange

This is a private development where the University is responsible for administering room allocations, rent collection and welfare support.

Walnut Street

The cost of accommodation from £70-154 per week based on different types of accommodation.

Private Accommondation


 A number of students choose to move out after thrie first year,mostly they prefer to make their own arrangements for private accommodation. The standard of properties in Leicester is highm and the prices are reasonable from around £50 per week, including utility bill.

BBC Radio Leicester - local radio


BBC Radio Leicester is the BBC Local Radio service for the English counties of Leicestershire and Rutland.

It broadcasts from studios in Leicester on 104.9 FM, on DAB, and via the BBC iPlayer on its website (where individual programmes are also available using the "listen again" facility). The station's former 837 kHz medium wave frequency from the Freeman's Common transmitter near the University of Leicester is now used by the BBC Asian Network which originated in Leicester but is now a national network delivered via DAB, digital satellite, Freeview and other systems across the UK and beyond.

Leicester Mercury - local newspaper

The Leicester Mercury is a British regional newspaper, owned by the Daily Mail and General Trust, for the city of Leicester and the counties of Leicestershire and Rutland.

The newspaper is the sixth largest-selling regional title in England, and the largest in the Midlands.

Lush Radio - the radio from University of Leicester

Lush Radio is founded in officially in 1996 under the title of LUSH FM, LUSH Radio is the radio station of the University of Leicester Students' Union. It is run and presented exclusively by students and broadcasts a mixture of music, chat and news, providing Leicester students and Leicester residents a local alternative to other regional and national radio stations.

Soprts in Leicester

Leicester is home to two major sporting clubs - Leicester City Football Club and Leicester Tigers Rugby Club. The college boasts a longstanding relationship with both and offer students discounted tickets to some matches and games.


Leicester Tigers on Welford Road are one of the most successful rugby union teams in Europe, having won the European cup twice, the first tier of English rugby eight times, and the Anglo-Welsh cup six times. Notable former players include Englands Rugby world cup winning captain Martin Johnson, Neil Back, Dean Richards and Austin Healey.

Leicester City have also enjoyed a fair degree of success. They have championed the second tier of the English league system on no less than six occasions, competed in the top flight regularly during their history, won three Football League Cups and reached the FA Cup Final four times despite never winning the trophy. In the 2008–09 season they competed in and won League One (third tier), to which they were relegated for the first time.
